The PM, Thaksin Sinawat, he was very popular for a long time but was recently found to be corrupt. This triggered national protests, so he pulled an election real quick before the opposition could get their stuff together, which just pissed people off more.
There's also a low-level Muslim insurgency down south, and the government has been critized for violently overreacting to some stuff.
